Dow Jones Industrial Average, 1987 Stock Market Crash

23 October 2017

Technical Summary: In these times of low volatility it is sometimes easy to forget the past. October 2017 marks 30 years since the 1987 stock market crash. So we thought we would make a chart. For those that do not know on Monday October 19, 1987 the Dow Jones Industrial Average 22.61% in a single days trading. Making it the worst single day loss in the history of the markets. The above chart shows the advance from November 1986 through October 1987 and the subsequent consolidation. The 5 year chart on the right shows the immediate aftermath of the crash and the subsequent rally. There are some interesting lessons to take from these charts. It is often viewed by history as a one off or out of the blue event. However the chart tells a different story and gives some clues as what was to come. On Friday the 16th the market fell 4.6% on the largest record trading volume. At this stage however the prior up trend of the market had already reversed and was heading downwards. Astute traders or investors could have been able to minimise the damage by using the chart to manage their risk.

Remember 19th of October 1987? Those that do probably do not have fond memories...
